About Kigali

Rwanda offers a distinctive combination of wildlife, nature, culture and modern urban experiences. Often called the “Land of a Thousand Hills,” the country is defined by green highlands, volcanic landscapes, lakes, forests and carefully protected national parks.

Kigali provides a convenient starting point for exploring the country, with restaurants, cultural attractions, markets, galleries and important historical sites. North of the capital, Volcanoes National Park is internationally known for mountain gorilla trekking and dramatic views of the Virunga volcanoes.

In the east, Akagera National Park offers classic savannah scenery and wildlife viewing, while Nyungwe National Park in the southwest protects an extensive montane rainforest where visitors can experience primate tracking, hiking, birdlife and forest landscapes.

Lake Kivu provides a more relaxed side of Rwanda, with lakeside towns, boat excursions and scenic views. Beyond the major attractions, visitors can also discover local food, crafts, music, community experiences and Rwanda’s rich cultural heritage.

Rwanda’s relatively compact size makes it possible to combine several very different experiences within one journey, from wildlife and forest adventures to city life, cultural encounters and lakeside relaxation.

PLAN YOUR VISIT

Know before you go

Practical guidance for planning a visit to Kigali.

Best time to visit

Rwanda can be visited throughout the year, although the experience varies with the seasons.

The main dry season, generally from June to September, is popular for wildlife viewing, hiking and gorilla trekking because trails are often easier to navigate. Another relatively dry period usually occurs from December to February.

The wetter months bring greener landscapes and can be especially rewarding for photography, birding and visitors who prefer lush scenery. Gorilla trekking operates throughout the year, although forest conditions can be wetter and more demanding during rainy periods.

Visitors planning specific wildlife activities should check current park conditions and permit availability before travelling.

Getting around

Kigali is well connected by road to Rwanda’s major tourism areas, and many visitors explore the country through private transfers, organised tours, rental vehicles or scheduled public transport.

Within Kigali, taxis and motorcycle taxis are widely used, while buses connect many towns across the country.

For national parks and more remote destinations, a private vehicle, experienced driver-guide or organised transfer can make travel considerably easier. A suitable vehicle is particularly useful for wildlife areas and routes where road conditions may vary.

Because Rwanda is relatively compact, it is possible to travel between Kigali and several major destinations within the same itinerary without requiring domestic flights.

Practical information

Rwanda uses the Rwandan franc (RWF) as its national currency. Card payments are increasingly available in Kigali and larger tourism establishments, but carrying some local currency is useful for smaller purchases and rural areas.

Kinyarwanda is the national language, while English, French and Swahili are also used in different settings.

Travellers should carry appropriate clothing for both warm daytime conditions and cooler highland or early-morning temperatures. A light rain jacket, comfortable walking shoes and sun protection are useful for most itineraries.

Gorilla and other primate activities may require advance permits, and availability can be limited during popular travel periods.

Entry and visa requirements depend on nationality and can change, so visitors should always confirm the latest requirements with Rwanda’s official immigration authorities before travelling.

For national parks and wildlife activities, visitors should follow the instructions of authorised guides and park staff.
